PORTER - A New Hampshire man who was bicycling toward Portland died Monday when he collided with a tractor trailer truck on Route 25.

John Lacaillade II, 38, of Meredith was killed instantly when he fell off his bicycle and was hit by the trailer's rear wheels, state police said.

Lacaillade was riding with family members, some of whom had ridden from California to Maine, police said. Lacaillade joined the ride in New Hampshire and the group planned to arrive in Portland later in the day.

Lacaillade may have lost control of his bike on loose pavement or gravel, police said.

A section of Route 25 was closed for six hours.

The truck's driver, Renald Morin, 30, of Quebec was hauling wood chips. He was not injured and police do not expect to bring any charges against him.
