IN THE WEATHER:

Feels like fall again this morning! And the wind doesn't make it feel any warmer. It's a cold 59 degrees, for sure. And that breeze will keep the temperatures down for the day. Bright blue skies, though, and refreshingly dry, highs in the low 70s.
From Bill in Rockland: Not a cloud in the sky, only a very slight breeze, but 50 degrees of "unwarmth" do get your attention at 4:45 this morning.
From Marc in Brunswick:Clear skies above, but there's a chill in the air that says summer is not going to last. It's clear skies here and 54 degrees.
ON THE ROAD:
The following work is planned for the northbound lanes of Route 1, Brunswick:• Repair of deteriorated joints in the underlying concrete road from the Route 196 on-ramp to Cooks Corner, which will require a lane closure.
• Paving the Route 196 on-ramp to Route 1 north. This will require the ramp to be closed to all traffic. Detour signs will direct traffic to Route 1 North via Route 24 in Topsham and Brunswick.
• HOLMES ROAD IN SCARBOROUGH: Closed for paving today. The road is expected to be closed from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m., weather permitting. Any questions should be directed to the Scarborough Public Works Department at 883-5159.
ON THE OCEAN:

• MEANWHILE: On the water, a high pressure from Canada brings us a brisk day on the water. Northwest winds blow around 10 knots, with a chance of 15 knot gusts. Seas 1 to 2 feet.
High tides in Portland: 7:26 a.m. and 7:44 p.m. Low tide: 1:21 p.m.

STATEWIDE -- A number of things are going on within the state's court systems today. The following are scheduled for today:
STATUS HEARING -- CUMBERLAND COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT: For Brandon Brown, who is accused of shooting a man after an altercation on June 24 outside the Cactus Club, a downtown Portland nightclub. Brown is charged with attempted murder. He is accused of shooting James Sanders, 27, during an altercation outside a bar located near Brown's apartment. Family members have said the bullet severed Sanders' spine and would likely leave him unable to walk.
ARRAIGNMENT -- CUMBERLAND COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT: Thomas Cassidy, 19, who was indicted earlier this month for setting fires to cars in Portland on April 11. He is charged with setting 11 early morning car fires, 11 counts of burglary to a car and three counts of theft.
CONTINUATION -- KENNEBEC COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT: Leo R. Hylton, the man accused in a home invasion that left a father and daughter critically injured, is expected back in court today for more discussion on bail conditions. Hylton, 18, of Augusta is charged with elevated aggravated assault in a break-in May 27 where William Guerrette, 48, a former state legislator, and Nicole Guerrette, 10, suffered serious injuries and stab wounds from a machete. Hylton was arrested two days later and has yet to enter a plea. He is being held on the assault charge and on a separate charge of violating conditions of release on a theft charge in Augusta. Justice Donald Marden continued the case until today, as Hylton has not been formally arraigned.
SENTENCING -- KENNEBEC COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT: Paula Caron, 51, the Waterville woman who now admits embezzling about $900,000 from her family's company over a five-year period, will be sentenced today. Caron initially pleaded not guilty. However, on May 7, she returned to court and changed her plea to guilty. District Attorney Evert Fowle said the state will seek a sentence of 10 years in jail, with all but five years suspended, and three years' probation. Under the terms of the plea agreement, Caron's attorney, Arnold Clark, can argue for less jail time.

Police say 44-year-old Peter Perfect of Carroll Plantation (seen in the photo) was last seen in Lincoln, in Penobscot County, Sunday afternoon attending church with his two daughters.
Perfect was expected to drop the children off at his estranged wife's home early Sunday morning, but never did, and has not been heard from.
The children are 6-year-old Aleah Perfect and 2-year-old Amara Perfect. The three are believed to be traveling in Perfect's 2003 Saturn with Maine license plates 3070 LH.

NORFOLK, VA. (AP) -- The reason a twin-engine radar plane crashed off the coast of North Carolina a year ago, killing a Maine Navy man, may forever remain a mystery.
Navy investigators say they have been unable to determine what caused the crash, which killed three men. Among them was Lt. j.g. Jerry Smith, 25, of Greenville. Thirty-year-old Lt. Cameron Hall of Natchitoches, La., and 31-year-old Lt. Ryan Betton of Collinsville, Va., were also killed.
A report released Monday indicates the E2-C Hawkeye experienced problems with a cockpit indicator during flight the preceding day. It also notes the most recent maintenance records were on board when the plane crashed. But the said there was no evidence of maintenance issues causing the crash.
The plane went down just after takeoff from the Norfolk-based aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman during exercises that involve taking off and landing on a carrier deck.
