A number of things are going on within the state's court systems today. The following are scheduled for today:
STATUS HEARING -- CUMBERLAND COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT: For Brandon Brown, who is accused of shooting a man after an altercation on June 24 outside the Cactus Club, a downtown Portland nightclub. Brown is charged with attempted murder. He is accused of shooting James Sanders, 27, during an altercation outside a bar located near Brown's apartment. Family members have said the bullet severed Sanders' spine and would likely leave him unable to walk.
ARRAIGNMENT -- CUMBERLAND COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT: Thomas Cassidy, 19, who was indicted earlier this month for setting fires to cars in Portland on April 11. He is charged with setting 11 early morning car fires, 11 counts of burglary to a car and three counts of theft.
CONTINUATION -- KENNEBEC COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT: Leo R. Hylton, the man accused in a home invasion that left a father and daughter critically injured, is expected back in court today for more discussion on bail conditions. Hylton, 18, of Augusta is charged with elevated aggravated assault in a break-in May 27 where William Guerrette, 48, a former state legislator, and Nicole Guerrette, 10, suffered serious injuries and stab wounds from a machete. Hylton was arrested two days later and has yet to enter a plea. He is being held on the assault charge and on a separate charge of violating conditions of release on a theft charge in Augusta. Justice Donald Marden continued the case until today, as Hylton has not been formally arraigned.
SENTENCING -- KENNEBEC COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT: Paula Caron, 51, the Waterville woman who now admits embezzling about $900,000 from her family's company over a five-year period, will be sentenced today. Caron initially pleaded not guilty. However, on May 7, she returned to court and changed her plea to guilty. District Attorney Evert Fowle said the state will seek a sentence of 10 years in jail, with all but five years suspended, and three years' probation. Under the terms of the plea agreement, Caron's attorney, Arnold Clark, can argue for less jail time.
