Maine joins new global warming lawsuit

By John Richardson Portland Press Herald Staff Reporter August 26, 2008 11:49 AM

Twelve states, including Maine, sued the federal government late Monday to force the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to regulate global warming pollution from oil refineries.

The other states are New York, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington. The City of New York, the District of Columbia and the Environmental Integrity Project, an advocacy group, also joined the filing.

The states argue that the Clean Air Act requires the EPA to periodically review and update emissions standards for industries that pollute the air. There are no restrictions now on carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases from oil refineries, although the states say a Supreme Court decision makes it clear that the gases are pollutants under the law.
