BATH -- Firefighters are currently on the scene of a fire at Bath Iron Works, a company spokesman said.
Nobody was injured, and the fire appeared to be mostly out, with just a small amount of smoke visible shortly after noon, according to BIW spokesman Jim DeMartini.
Details about the possible cause and extent of the fire were not immediately available because officials were still at the fire scene, he said.
The fire, which broke out at about 11 a.m., was on the roof of a painting facility, known as the "blast and paint" area. Large modules for ships are brought inside that building to be cleaned or "blasted" with an abrasive material and then painted, DeMartini said.
The building opened in 2001, making it a relatively new building at BIW.
