Police warn of phone scam

By Tux Turkel Portland Press Herald Staff Writer August 27, 2008 02:31 PM

Scarborough police are warning residents not to fall for a credit card telephone scam.

The department has heard from some potential victims who receive an automated call, stating that the call was from Visa and that their credit card account was above the contract limits. In order to avoid a $60 fee, they need to call 1-800-458-8914.

When people call the number, they are asked for personal account information via an automated system.

Police say they have no information as to any damages caused by this scheme, but Visa's fraud department has been made aware of the incident and is investigating. They recommend that anyone who suspects that they have been a victim of this scam should contact their credit card company.
