No serious injuries in Pittston fire

By Kennebec Journal Staff August 27, 2008 09:21 PM

PITTSTON -- A Whitefield Road homeowner escaped serious injury Wednesday when a stove vent caught fire as he was cooking supper.

Norman Grant was helped from his mobile home at 111 Whitefield Road by members of a road crew working nearby, Jason Farris of the Pittston Fire Department said. While Grant and those who assisted him suffered smoke inhalation, all declined treatment at the scene.

The fire broke out shortly after 6 p.m. as Grant was cooking on the gas stove in the kitchen. The fan in the vent hood caught fire, apparently due to an electrical malfunction, and quickly got into the walls and up into the roof, Farris said.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke pouring from the home and flames in the kitchen. They attacked the blaze from both sides of the wall and from the room, and were able to control the flames within 15 minutes, Farris said.

"We pulled the oven out and ripped the wall open," he said. "It was a good catch. Once they get up in the roof, usually they're gone."

The home suffered damage to the stove, microwave, cupboards, walls and ceiling, Farris said. The home is insured.

About 30 firefighters from seven departments responded.
