Winthrop man killed in tractor accident

By Craig Crosby Kennebec Journal Staff Writer August 29, 2008 05:07 PM

AUGUSTA -- A Winthrop man was killed Thursday when the tractor he was riding struck a tree on Stone Street.

David Dick, 52, was pronounced dead at the scene, Lt. Jared Mills of the Augusta Police Department said.

Dick was mowing an apple orchard at 71 Stone St. around 3:30 p.m. with what Mills described as a medium-sized John Deere tractor.

Dick apparently attempted to drive under a tree.

"He was pinned between the limb and the tractor," Mills said.

The state medical examiner is expected to conduct an autopsy to confirm a cause of death, Mills said. The incident is not suspicious, Mills said.
