York police arrested a New Hampshire man in a stolen car today after a chase that saw speeds of more than 100 mph.
The York Police Department had gotten several calls at about 9:45 a.m. from Scotland Bridge Road residents complaining about a new red Chevrolet Corvette driving down the road at high speeds. York Det. Thomas Cryan was in the area and spotted the Corvette stopped in the road, so he pulled in behind it and took down the registration number, police said. The driver sped away and released the T roof of the Corvette, sending it back toward the detective's car.
The male driver and one occupant drove at more than 100 mph down Scotland Bridge Road and onto Route 91, heading toward South Berwick. The driver turned around when he saw a South Berwick officer coming up 91 toward him.
York police had put down a spike mat, but the driver turned around on Scotland Bridge Road and headed back to Route 91, police said. At that point, the York Police Department called off the chase, due to the extreme speeds, police said.
At 10:09 a.m., the Corvette crashed just after the bridge on Scotland Bridge Road. The driver ran into the woods, but Maine State Police Cpl. Jerome Carr and his tracking dog were quickly on the scene. At 11:18 a.m., York Officer Tyler Hathorne found the suspect hiding in a garage at the end of Hickory Lane.
Police arrested Joseph Stowell, 22, of 236 Cate St., Portsmouth, N.H. He was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, operating after suspension, eluding a police officer, operating under the influence, criminal speed and criminal trespass. He is wanted in Maine, with three warrants for his arrest, police said, and also has two outstanding warrants in Massachusetts.
He was taken to York Hospital due to non-life-threatening injuries, and is being held on a $10,000 bail.
