FRYE ISLAND -- A 68-year-old man who died today while swimming in Sebago Lake had a history of heart problems and likely had a heart attack, rescue officials said.

William Lanier of Lowell, Massachusetts, had gone out for a long walk Sunday morning, then went right out swimming when he got back, family members told Frye Island Fire Department officials. The Lanier family owns the lakefront property on Leisure Lane where the incident happened.

Frye Island Fire Department Chief Steve Perrson said Lanier was discovered floating in the lake by a family member who had been with him just a few minutes earlier. Local rescue crews tried unsuccessfully to revive him.

Lanier had a history of heart problems, including two bypass surgeries, Perrson said.
