GARDINER -- Two people are facing a litany of charges after a brief high-speed chase Saturday morning.
Joshua Stephen Hood, 27, of Sidney was charged with operating under the influence, eluding an officer, refusing to submit to arrest and driving to endanger. Hood also was charged with violating conditions of release, aggravated operating after license revocation, speeding 30-plus miles per hour over the limit, reckless conduct, criminal mischief, failure to stop at a stop sign and attaching false plates.
Samantha Lynn Hanson, 22, of Manchester was arrested on a warrant charging her with theft, unlawful drug possession, unlawful furnishing of a scheduled drug and possession of a suspended license.
The chase began shortly before 1 a.m., when Gardiner police Officer Norm Gove noticed a vehicle operating erratically from West Hill Road to Highland Avenue, Gardiner Police Chief James M. Toman said. When Gove attempted to pull the vehicle over, Hood sped away, Toman said.
Gove was able to catch up but Hood refused to stop. He eventually drove over a lawn to pull behind a home on Northern Avenue, Toman said.
Gove was able to take Hood and another passenger, who was not ultimately charged, into custody.
Hanson, a third passenger in the vehicle, fled into the woods. She emerged and was arrested just before a Kennebec County sheriff's canine unit was sent to retrieve her, Toman said.
The chase lasted just a couple of minutes at speed estimated by police of 70 mph. Maine State Police assisted.
