WELLS -- Voters in November will decide whether the town should adopt a temporary water extraction moratorium.
The Board of Selectmen on Tuesday voted 3 to 2 to put the proposal on the ballot.
The measure calls for a ban on large-scale water extraction and any testing related to that activity until the town enacts an ordinance on the issue.
The moratorium proposal comes after the Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Wells Water District tabled a plan to sell water to Poland Spring. The plan to sell up to 432,000 gallons per day of excess capacity for about $900,000 per year met with public opposition.
