Jan Phillips, a University of Southern Maine Lewiston-Auburn College faculty member and associate dean for community relations, was named the first recipient of an international award for outstanding research on the use, design and effects of toys.

Phillips received the award from the International Toy Research Association and the British Toy and Hobby Association.

Her research explores the role of consumerism on the development of family life and how adults and children interact in the consumption of toys and other items.
