AUGUSTA -- A new study commission focusing on protecting Maine's farmland is holding its first meeting today.
The Commission to Study the Protection of Farms and Farmland was created by the Legislature to explore options such as the creation of agricultural protection areas. Sixteen states now designate similar protection areas in an effort to preserve agriculture and open space, according to state Sen. John Nutting, D-Leeds, co-chairman of the Legislature's Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Committee.
The commission, which is examining various tax incentives and other strategies, is expected to submit a report and recommendations to the Legislature in December.
