Brownfield man charged with criminal solicitation

By David Hench Portland Press Herald Staff Writer September 03, 2008 02:29 PM

Biddeford police have scheduled a press conference at 3 p.m. to discuss the arrest of a 28-year-old Brownfield man charged with criminal solicitation.

Police said Michael Berk tried to pay a Biddeford man for sexual access to the man's daughter. Following his arraignment in Biddeford District Court, Berk was released on $1,000 bail pending a future court appearance.

According to police, on Aug. 28, the Biddeford man advertised on the Internet service Craigslist that he was looking for odd jobs so he could help feed his children.

Police allege that Michael Berk responded to the ad, and upon learning that the man had a young daughter, suggested he give the father money so he could perform a sex act with the girl.

Police said the father notified Biddeford police, who enlisted the help of the Maine Computer Crimes Task Force. An undercover trooper arranged to meet the man in Westbrook later that day.

The man repeated his offer and was arrested, police said. Police are now analyzing computer files seized under a search warrant that was prepared by the Secret Service.
