Lobster boat explodes in Winter Harbor

By David Hench Portland Press Herald Staff Writer September 04, 2008 12:39 PM

Two men were thrown into the water when the boat they were on exploded this morning in Winter Harbor.

The Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter from Cape Cod as well as a rescue boat and cutter, which were joined by local police and firefighters, State Police and the Maine Marine Patrol to search the area. The men were found safely out of the water.

The First Run, a 25-foot lobster boat, exploded and burst into flames at 1 a.m. where it was anchored offshore in Bunker Harbor, the Coast Guard said.

The Maine Marine Patrol is investigating the cause of the explosion.

The boat drifted to shore and is no longer burning, the Coast Guard said. There have been no reports of pollution.
