Baldacci waives limits for emergency aid

AUGUSTA -- Gov. John Baldacci today responded to a request for assistance from Louisiana to help victims of Hurricane Gustav, according to his press office.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal contacted Baldacci asking that Maine honor an executive order that grants exemptions, including weight and size limits, to motor carriers involved in emergency relief efforts. Baldacci signed a similar executive order today for Maine.

"While Hurricane Gustav did not inflict the level of damage many of us feared as it approached land, the storm still did significant harm," Baldacci said in a statement. "We will honor Gov. Jindal's request and exempt carriers responding to this crisis from weight and size limits on state roads."
