WINTHROP -- Several rescue and police agencies are on the scene of an accident on Route 202 and Route 135 in Winthrop. The accident was reported right before noon.
At least four vehicles are believed to be involved in the accident, including a black pickup truck that was in a ditch alongside Route 202 and a gold Chevy Trailblazer with the front smashed in.
Another maroon-colored vehicle appeared to be smashed in on one of the sides.
Winthrop police dispatcher Mike Malok said some victims were taken to area hospitals with "no serious injuries," but did not elaborate.
"Everyone is still on scene," Malok said. "I don't know anything else other than that."
Eastbound traffic on Route 202 had to be diverted on to Route 135 to get around the accident.
It was not immediately known how many people were involved in the crash, though witnesses said they saw about three or four children in some of the vehicles.
Bob Marshall was working on the roof of his daughter's house on Route 202, less than a mile from the scene of the accident.
"I didn't see it, but I definitely heard it," he said.
His daughter, Debbie Marshall, said the sound of the impact of the vehicles was "like a loud boom."
The t-intersection of Routes 202 and 135 has been the scene of other accidents, one as recent as only a few weeks ago, Bob Marshall said.
"I think the speed limit should be cut down to 45 mph on this road," Bob Marshall said. "There have been plenty of accidents."
Eugene Ellis, who also lives at the residence on Route 202, agreed.
"It's a pretty bad section (of road) down here," Ellis said.
