Mercy, police honor slain guard

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report September 08, 2008 11:20 AM

Mercy Hospital workers, police, and family members of slain hospital security guard James Angelo attended a ceremony this morning in the parking lot where he was shot Sunday morning.

Angelo, 27, of Portland was shot shortly after 4 a.m., as he returned to the hospital building after a break. He died later that morning.

Portland police, who say multiple shots were fired, have not identified suspects in the shooting or said whether they believe the shooting in the lot on Winter Street was random.

Angelo's mother, who works in a hospitality department at the hospital, collapsed after arriving at the parking lot and was helped to her feet by hospital staff.

A chaplain was present at the service, which was conducted in more than one
language. Members of the media were asked to keep their distance from the
ceremony, which took place on private property.

Acting Police Chief Joseph Loughlin attended the ceremony. He said Sunday he
had known Angelo and his family since the mid-1990s. Originally from Sudan,
they had resettled in Portland after several years in Egypt.

Members of the Sudanese community will meet with city officials at City Hall
later today, said Edward Laboke, a relative of Angelo's and Sudanese leader
in Portland.
