IN THE WEATHER:

Unsettled weather today, as we are greeted by the sun, but may experience a few major thunderstorms by the afternoon. When they do roll in, they should affect the west and interior sections more so than the coast. It is a cold front moving in, which means tomorrow the sun returns, but along with it comes chillier, breezier temperatures.
From Bill in Rockland: Clouds have now covered all but the very eastern part of the sky here. It's 56 degrees at 5:50 a.m. and there's little or no wind at ground level, but the tree tops are swaying slightly. Looks like there's little hope of a sunny day.
From Mark in Brunswick: As the skies start to brighten here in Brunswick, we have a few clouds overhead and 59 degrees for the start of the day.
From Shawn in Yarmouth: It is 55 degrees here in Yarmouth this morning. Some mottled pink clouds cover the blue sky. They seem to be moving quickly, so there must be some wind in the upper atmosphere; down here on the ground the trees are still. I continued to hear flocks of geese flying into the early night yesterday; I guess Fall is on its way!
ON THE ROAD:
• ON ROUTE 1, NORTHBOUND, BRUNSWICK a lane will be closed because of paving from Mill Street to Cooks Corner. Traffic will be slowed.
ON THE OCEAN:

Winds begin at 5 to 15 knots, with gusts up to 20 knots, increasing to 15 to 20 knots with gusts of up to 30 knots possible by late afternoon. Seas 2 to 4 feet, building to 4 to 6 feet, as the chance of thunderstorms increases.
High tides in Portland: 7:07 a.m. and 7:16 p.m. Low tide: 12:57 p.m.

THE NEWEST NEWS:

WESTBROOK -- Eleven people were arrested here yesterday, after the police department launched a detail to find people wanted on warrants and get them back into the court system.

The detail is being funded through the U.S. Marshal's office, which gave the city of Westbrook a $5,500 grant to hit the streets and seek out the people who are outstanding on 300 or so warrants.
Two teams of six officers went door to door yesterday, rounding up those they could find wanted on a warrant.
Those details continue today as the city, which partners with the Southern Maine Violent Crimes Task Force, works to find as many violators as possible.

AUGUSTA -- Seven Maine counties will share in a $250,000 federal grant to help businesses recover from severe storms and flooding that plagued the region in April and May of this year.
Gov. John Baldacci announced the grant Monday from the Commerce Department's Economic Development Administration. The state sought the funds specifically to aid businesses in Aroostook, Piscataquis, Penobscot, Somerset, Lincoln, Waldo and Knox counties.
"I'm pleased that the federal government is providing additional resources to help Maine businesses," Gov. Baldacci said in a prepared statement. "My administration has been working to build our capacity to help businesses and other employers in the state plan for and recover from disasters such as the flooding that impacted Aroostook County and others this spring. The U.S. Economic Development Administration grant will enable Maine's economy to better weather natural disasters and get back up and running as soon as possible."

FARMINGTON - A woman from Midland, Texas, selling magazine subscriptions door-to-door in Farmington over the weekend was arrested and charged with theft of cash after an Oakland resident reported being solicited by someone working for the same company on Sunday.
Shaleen Hensley, 19, was arrested by Farmington police officer Ed Hastings Sunday after he tracked her down with the help of Lewiston police at the motel she and other magazine salespeople were staying at in Lewiston. She was charged with class E theft for allegedly stealing less than $500 from a woman on Davis Road in Farmington on Saturday.

PORTLAND -- One of the three men involved in the beating of a Navy petty officer in Portland's Old Port in May is expected in Cumberland County Superior Court today.
Jacob Davidson, 21, was indicted with aggravated assault for his alleged role in the beating of Odelmo Robinson, an aircraft mechanic at Brunswick Naval Air Station.

Witnesses told police that Thomas Hartt was the one who initially punched Robinson in the face and Christopher Hartt was among those who kicked Robinson in the head.
The three men and Robinson were among 82 passengers on a reggae cruise on the Casablanca in Casco Bay. Afterward, witnesses said the men were calling Robinson and his friends names and then attacked Robinson, kicking him when he lay motionless on the ground, witnesses told police.
Robinson was in a coma for a period at Maine Medical Center and authorities say he might have died had the hospital not been so close.
He has since recovered and is back at work, police say.

I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP:
News of the weird and other strange things happening in Maine.
EAST MACHIAS -- Remember that stolen mechanical gorilla I told you about last week? The one that was taken from outside "Sandy's Sales" flea market store.
Well, it has been found two states away in Vermont. Lowell Miller realized over Labor Day weekend that his 8-foot-tall gorilla dubbed "Seamore" was stolen. An all-points-bulletin was put out for the mechanical monkey.
This week, Vermont State Police found Seamore in a corn field after a video confession surfaced on Youtube.com. The video shows the hooded abductor with a sock puppet on his or her hand first demanding ransom, then apologizing for causing so much trouble. (AP)
The confession! And the apology.
