The sun rises over the Portland Fire Department's Central Fire Station as the flag stands proud at half-staff, honoring the day. The picture is also a link to the Portland Press Herald list of events going on today to remember those who died and the people who lost family and friends seven years ago.

For me, I will be thinking of Sally, my friend from Kennebunk, whose brother Jim Roux was on United Airlines Flight 175, the second plane that flew into the World Trade Center. While we will all go through the day with some sadness, remembering how our lives were affected as a nation, she and her family will have to experience it in a way that is painfully personal.

Do you have any thoughts you want to share about today? Any memories you want to share? Any words of condolence? Please use the comment section below and share. With us. With Sally.

IN THE WEATHER:

bluesky.jpg
At 9 a.m., it was 50 degrees in downtown Portland.

Grab a jacket. You'll need it on this chilly start to the day. But there is a promise of sun and seasonally pleasant temperatures for later, with just a few wispy clouds and a light breeze.

The Sunrise Herald WEATHER WATCHERS report.

smallbluesky.jpgFrom Bill in Rockland: It's a beautifully clear calm morning here at 6:15. However, the 42 degrees would seem to be a new mark for nippy this September, at least here on the coast, a stark reminder of the national chill we experienced on this day in 2001.

peakingsun.jpg From Mark in Brunswick: A few clouds overhead and it's official - summer's over. 42 degrees here this morning, and it feels COLD.

smallbluesky.jpg From Shawn in Yarmouth: It is a very chilly morning, compared to what we have had recently. It is 43 degrees here in Yarmouth at 5:50 a.m. The sky is brightening and looks clear. I am not seeing any wind and fortunately, we did not have any frost. Hope it holds off for a few more weeks so I can get all my tomatoes ripe and picked!

ON THE ROAD:

The Exit 22 southbound (I-295) ramp is CLOSED until Friday night as emergency replacement of the culvert there gets underway. The road sustained heavy damage during the road-eating rains from last month. Detour signs will be placed directing people to Exit 20, the Desert Road exit, until the work is complete.

A LANE CLOSURE IN BRUNSWICK, IN THE NORTHBOUND LANES OF ROUTE 1 AND THE MASON STREET ON-RAMP for paving. The work today will be from Mill Street to Cooks Corner and on the Mason Street on-ramp to Route 1 northbound. Traffic delays are expected, especially in the the area of the Mason Street on-ramp to Route 1, which will require the ramp to be closed to all traffic. Detour signs will direct traffic to Route 1 North via Route 24 and Route 196 in Topsham.

ON THE OCEAN:

News you need to know, now:

FARMINGTON -- A Biddeford man facing charges after allegedly exposing himself to an 13-year-old Augusta boy at a dance camp held at Winthrop High School will be in court today to argue bail.

The alleged incident occurred while Keith R. Nadeau, 19, was out on bail pending a trial in Franklin County on charges leveled in December that he had child pornography on his computer while a student at the University of Maine at Farmington. In that case, Nadeau he allegedly showed another student photos of young children performing sex acts, said Ted Blais, UMF's public safety director.

Nadeau was released on $3,000 bail on that charge and was ordered to have no contact with children younger than 16.

Those conditions were amended in May to allow Nadeau to work as an instructor at a Saco-based dance company for children 6 and older. According to an affidavit filed by Officer Paul Ferland of the Winthrop police, Nadeau exposed himself to a boy as the two were alone in a locker room before a performance in Winthrop on July 24.

Nadeau was arrested for that on Aug. 18 at his mother's Biddeford home following a week-long investigation by Winthrop police. He was charged with visual sexual aggression against a child, a misdemeanor, and violating conditions of his release.

Nadeau, who has been back in the Franklin County Jail since August 29, is set to appear in Franklin County Superior Court today for a motion to revoke his bail.

PARIS -- The 12-year-old boy charged with burning down the wooden Perham Field Grandstand at the athletic complex in West Paris in July is due to be in juvenile court today.

The boy has not been identified due to his age. He was charged by investigator Chris Stafford on Aug. 5 for the fire, which destroyed the popular landmark on July 24.

LEWISTON -- Police say they have recovered a number of guns that were stolen on Aug. 27 from the Pine Tree Trading Post, and they have made an arrest in the case.

Troy Bradley, 18, of Lewiston was charged with felony counts of burglary and theft after police identified him as one of the suspects who took the guns, worth $12,000 during the robbery.

As a result of the police investigation, 11 of the 14 guns were recovered. Lt. Michael T. McGonagle said police are certain the other three are not in circulation and pose no threat to the population.

Bradley remains in jail on $4,000 cash bail. Police say it is likely more arrests will be made in the case. Furthermore, it is likely the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, which has aided in the investigation, will take over the prosecution due to the seriousness of the offense.

WESTBROOK -- The Fred C. Wescott Junior High School is closed today due to a power outage.

No other schools in Westbrook are closed. Information on the open house that was scheduled there today will be posted later in the day on the Westbrook School District website.
