LEWISTON -- A state board will hear testimony Friday on a proposed rule change that would require Maine dentists to use electrocardiograms to monitor patients under moderate sedation.
Some dentists say the EKG requirement is "overkill" that could deter already skittish patients from getting dental care they need. Dentists now use devices that measure blood pressure, heart rate and blood oxygen levels to monitor sedated patients.
The hearing before the State Board of Dental Examiners will consider a number of proposed rule changes, including the EKG requirement.
