Quintuplet who is UNE student on TV tonight

By Bob Keyes Portland Press Herald Staff Writer September 12, 2008 11:11 AM

Meagan Chandler, one of the famous Colorado Chandler quintuplets and a first-year nursing student at the University of New England, will appear with her siblings and mother on Fox TV tonight and Sept. 19 on the game show "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?"

The show airs at 8 p.m. Comedian Jeff Foxworthy hosts the show, in which contestants are asked a series of questions and have the option of seeking help from a class of fifth-graders or a guest class.

In this show, the quintuplets mother, Jeri, is the contestant, and the quints served as the guest class.

"It was a blast," Chandler said of the filming, which occurred in July in Los Angeles. "We were all nervous at the beginning of the filming of '5th Grader,' but we quickly realized it's not live. They can stop and stand by, so it was a lot of fun. And Jeff Foxworthy is a very funny guy."

Chandler, 19, wouldn't say how the family fared in the game show, which will air over two episodes.

She will watch tonight with a group of friends at the Biddeford campus.

She admitted to being antsy about watching herself on TV, though this is not the first time the family has been on TV. They were featured NBC's "Today Show" earlier this year, and have been the subject of intense media scrutiny since they were born in 1999.

"I am kind of nervous, but not for me. I am nervous for one of my sisters and brother, who could have put down a different answer. I give everybody permission to laugh at them," she said.

Chandler has lived in Maine since the beginning of the school year. She had visited before, and decided to come east to break away from her family.

"I wanted to go off and be on my own, and be one of five instead of five of five," she said. "Plus, the nursing program at UNE is very god and rigorous."
