Vigil for Mercy guard draws over 300

The killing still fresh in their minds, members of Portland's African and Sudanese communities gathered at Monument Square on Friday to hold a candlelight vigil for James Angelo, the unarmed Mercy Hospital security guard who was fatally shot Sunday morning in a hospital parking lot.

Speaking of the need to end violence in the city, their emotion was apparent in front of a turnout that exceeded 300 people, including police and city officials.

"We are outraged. This should not have happened," Shalom Odokara told the crowd. "This has nothing to do with color, race or creed, because we mothers are mourning, and we do not want to mourn. Enough is enough."

A memorial service for Angelo, a native of Sudan, will be held today at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland. It will follow a funeral procession.

Mercy Hospital is offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individuals who shot and killed Angelo.
