By The Associated Press wire report September 13, 2008 02:17 PM

MAPLETON - Wildlife officials have verified that an 11-year-old boy has caught a record-breaking Arctic charr in Maine.

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife said Carter McLaughlin caught the fish Aug. 20 in Pushineer Pond in Township 15, Range 9. The fish was 25.4 inches long and weighed 5.24 pounds.

The previous record for a Maine-caught Arctic charr - which is also known as a blueback trout - was set in 1973 when Merton Wyman of Belgrade landed a 4 pound, 4 ounce variety on Basin Pond.
