Strong winds ripped through central and southern Maine Monday, resulting in lost power for many residents. Central Maine Power Co. reported that 11,400 customer accounts were without power at 1:30 p.m.

"Persistent winds kept our outage numbers up for a while today, despite our crews' efforts to fix the damage," said CMP spokeswoman Gail Rice.

CMP reported approximately 2,360 customer accounts still down at 3:30 p.m., including the Fairfield, Farmington and Skowhegan service areas.

Towns affected at 5:21 p.m. included Athens, Embden, Hartland, Madison, Newport, Norridgewock, New Portland, Newry, Palmyra, Phillips, Skowhegan, Solon and St. Albans.
