GARDINER -- Two people were taken to a Lewiston hospital after two motorcycles crashed on New Mills Bridge while returning from a benefit Sunday.
Dinah Ducharme, 43, of Auburn was treated at and released from Central Maine Medical Center.
A second woman, a passenger aboard a motorcycle being driven by John LeBlanc, 56, of Minot, also was taken to Central Maine Medical Center, Gardiner Police Chief James Toman said. The woman's identification was unavailable Monday; her injuries were not believed to be life threatening.
LeBlanc was not injured.
The crashes occurred shortly after 2 p.m. as the motorcycles were headed west on Cobbossee Avenue on their way home from the United Bikers toy run, an annual event that delivers toys to social service programs. The motorcyclists lost control on the wet, metal grated surface, Toman said.
"They might have been traveling a little too fast for conditions on that surface," he said.
Substances were not a factor in the crash and no charges are expected, Toman said. Both Ducharme's 2001 Honda and LeBlanc's 2005 Harley Davidson sustained heavy damage, Toman said.
