FREEPORT -- L.L. Bean is opening its first store in China.
The store at the Solana Mall in Beijing's Chaoyang Park will be the first of five to open in China this year. The effort is part of a joint venture with Youngone Corporation of Korea.
It's the first time L.L. Bean has made its products directly available to Chinese consumers.
Chris McCormick, L.L. Bean's president and chief executive officer, said a growing interest in outdoor and recreational activities in China makes it a natural fit for the company.
"This is an area we have been studying for some time as we've considered ways to expand our international presence and diversify our business. China provides many opportunities with their growing marketplace," McCormick said in a statement.
The Solana Mall store will have 3,000 square feet of retail space. The design and layout take their inspiration from the flagship Freeport store and will include weathered timbers and photos depicting the company's heritage.
