AUGUSTA -- Maine's fall foliage is turning, but not fast enough to warrant much change in the Department of Conservation's second foliage report of the season released today.
Forest rangers in Aroostook County where the change in leaf color begins each year are still reporting very low leaf color, or less than 10 percent toward peak, along with very low leaf drop.
Maple trees are now showing shades of red, and birch and ash trees are beginning to show tints of yellow at the highest elevations along Route 11 in the middle of the county.
Pockets of color are also emerging around Baxter State Park, Moosehead Lake and the Rangeley Lakes region, but the overall color change and leaf drop in these areas and the rest of the state remains very low.
To provide the most accurate foliage information, Department of Conservation rangers will report statewide conditions every Wednesday through Oct. 15.
The reports are posted online at http://www.mainefoliage.com and visitors to the Web site can sign up to receive the weekly reports by e-mail or RSS feed.
