A national group has named a Gardiner teacher Maine History Teacher of the Year.

Diana Dionne-Morang, a United States history teacher at Gardiner Regional Middle School, will receive a $1,000 honorarium and be entered into a national History Teacher of the Year award contest.

The New York-based Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and Preserve America, a government initiative to promote the study of history, issued the award.

Dionne-Morang "is a veteran teacher who is always looking for new ways to educate herself in order to give her students the richest, most fulfilling classroom experience possible," Carolin Collins, who coordinated the award for Maine, said in a statement.

Gardiner Regional Middle School will receive a collection of history books and materials from the Gilder Lehrman Institute.
