National Cancer Survivors Day event planned

AUGUSTA -- "There's no place like hope" is the theme of National Cancer Survivors Day, an annual event that will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sept. 27 at the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care. The center is located at at 361 Old Belgrade Rd. in Augusta.

Survivors, their loved ones and community members who want to show their support will hear stories from fellow survivors, enjoy music and learn about complementary therapies, healthy eating and other ways to help them through their journey.

Children can enjoy face painting, games and prizes. Refreshments will be available, including food samples and a barbecue. Everything is free of charge. This day is a celebration of survival, of life and of hope, according to a news release. For more information, call 626-4858.

Also, MaineGeneral Medical Center will sponsor the fifth annual "Walk for Hope" on Oct. 18 to raise money for and awareness of the hospital's Breast Care Program. This 5K walk starts at 9 a.m., with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m. at Sam's Club in Augusta.

Last year more than 650 people participated in the event, raising more than $80,000 for the Breast Care Program.
There is a $10 registration fee for participants. The fee is waived for breast cancer survivors
