Maine unemployment steady

By Noel K. Gallagher Portland Press Herald Staff Writer September 22, 2008 10:59 AM

Maine's unemployment rate for August was 5.5 percent, the same as July's rate but up from 4.8 percent a year ago, state officials announced.

Commissioner Laura Fortman said the rate reflects weakening labor market conditions in Maine.

The national unemployment rate for August was 6.1 percent in August, up from 5.7 percent in July.

In the last year, Maine industries reporting job gains included professional and business services and health care and social assistance. Industries with job losses included construction; trade, transportation, and utilities; financial activities; manufacturing; government; and information.
