Hall-Dale changes field hockey coaches in midseason

When Ellen Vickers resigned as Hall-Dale High School field hockey coach after the 2005 season, she thought that was it for her coaching career.

And it was -- until Friday.

Hall-Dale coach Jess Callahan, who took over for Vickers in 2006, resigned her position on Thursday, and Vickers was asked to finish the season as the Bulldogs coach.

Hall-Dale principal Steve Lavoie confirmed Callahan's resignation. Asked if anyone in the school administration had asked Callahan to resign, Lavoie said, "I can't discuss anything like that. She resigned. Personal reasons."

Callahan did not return messages from the Kennebec Journal left on her cell phone.

Vickers said Lavoie asked her Friday morning to finish the season with the team. After taking a couple hours to think it over and talk to her family, Vickers said yes, and took the bus with the Bulldogs to their game at Livermore Falls that afternoon.

"I didn't think as though it would be fair to walk the halls and look the girls in the eye, knowing that I could have stepped in and helped them, and I didn't," Vickers said.

"As far as the girls are concerned, I could not ask for a better resolution," Lavoie said.
