By Portland Press Herald Staff Report September 30, 2008 01:55 PM

1:56 p.m.

Portland police say the stabbing at Congress and Frederick streets early this morning does not appear to be a random attack.

An officer spotted the victim staggering with several stab wounds at the intersection at 1 a.m. The 24-year-old man was taken to Maine Medical Center where he underwent surgery. His injuries did not appear life-threatening, police said.

Police have interviewed witnesses but have made no arrests in the case.
Police say the man had been involved in an altercation shortly before the stabbing and was with a small group of people when the attack occurred.

9:30 a.m.

Portland police are investigating a stabbing that occurred during the early morning hours today around the vicinity of the Denny's Restaurant.

Little information is available at this hour. However, police say one person was stabbed and transported to the hospital. That person is in stable condition. The incident occurred around 1 a.m. this morning. The scene is now secure and there is no threat to the public. Police are still questioning suspects and have not made an arrest.

More information will be available as police release more from their investigation.
