The Jackson Laboratory Inc. in Bar Harbor faces a proposed $213,670 federal fine for hazardous waste handling and disclosure violations, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The EPA says an inspection in November 2006 found improperly stored chemicals and wastes in three of the research company's labs. The EPA also alleges that the company violated training requirements for employees who manage hazardous waste, and that the staff members who provided training were never properly trained themselves.
The EPA also alleges that Jackson Laboratory failed to notify the local fire department, emergency planning committee and state emergency response commission about hazardous chemicals stored at its facility.
Some violations cited by EPA are repeated instances of the violations cited by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection in 2003 and 2005, the agency said.
Jackson Laboratory will have an opportunity to respond to the allegations and negotiate any final penalties.
