Bank scammers target central Maine

Central Maine residents appear to be the targets this week of an uptick in automated phone scams.

Since Tuesday, KV Federal Credit Union has received more than a dozen calls from members and other area residents targeted by automated phone calls. The calls warn those who answer that their KV Federal Credit Union accounts or credit and debit cards are poised to expire. An automated voice then asks them to enter account or card numbers into the phone.

"They're not just targeting individuals," said Bill Tozier, a KV Federal Credit Union manager and security officer. "I suspect they're going through a phone directory for the central Maine area and working their way through that."

Tozier said a handful of local organizations without KV accounts called the credit union to ask about the phone call.
