Stolen gun leads to two arrests

By David Hench Portland Press Herald Staff Writer October 02, 2008 04:06 PM

The arrest of a Naples man on a charge of threatening his wife with a gun has led to another man being charged with stealing the gun during a burglary a year ago.

Cumberland County Sheriff's deputies were called to Valeriani Drive in Naples at 6 a.m. for a report that man had threatened his wife with a .22 caliber pistol.

The man was gone when deputies arrived, but Westbrook police found and detained William E. Merrow, 22, until sheriff's deputies arrested and charged him with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon. He is free on $500 bail.

Investigators recovered a gun, which they found had been stolen from a home in 2007.

The recovery led to the arrest of Joshua A. Valeriani, 23, who lives next door to Merrow on Valeriani Drive. Valeriani was charged with theft of a firearm and is being held on $5,000 bail at Cumberland County Jail.
