With the deadline days away, more than 22,000 Mainers have yet to file for their economic stimulus check from the federal government.
The deadline for the 22,000 retirees and disabled veterans who may be eligible to receive a stimulus payment, but who do not normally file tax returns, is Oct. 15, according to the Internal Revenue Service.
The Economic Stimulus Act passed in February provided millions of eligible Americans with a one-time payment from the federal government.
Anyone who receives at least $3,000 in Social Security income, self-employment income or veterans' disability payments is eligible. Of the 22,381 Mainers who have not filed, nearly 15,000 are 65 or older.
The stimulus payment is not taxable and it has no impact on other federal benefits.
