Waterville council to discuss Gilman School study

WATERVILLE - City councilors on Tuesday will hold a special meeting to discuss results of an impact study on the proposed Gilman Street School project.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the council chambers at The Center.

Developers Collaborative of Portland wants to turn the old school into 33 affordable apartments and renovate the building to historic standards. The $9 million project has drawn controversy from neighbors who fear the development will cause traffic, noise, and other problems and devalue their homes.

The neighborhood impact study was conducted at the behest of neighbors to determine how the area will be affected by such a development.

City planners have approved a site plan for the project with the condition that councilors approve a zone change that would allow 33 rather than the currently-allowed 28 apartments to be built as part of the development.

Councilors are expected to take a final vote on the zone change Oct. 21.
