PORTLAND -- A string of high-profile crimes this summer has triggered a public meeting tomorrow at City Hall.
Acting Police Chief Joseph Loughlin is scheduled to present an analysis of local crime trends and field questions from residents during a meeting of the City Council's Public Safety Committee.
The meeting is a response to several incidents this summer, including the slaying of James Angelo, the Mercy Hospital security guard gunned down last month outside the hospital on State Street.
The Angelo killing remains unsolved. Mercy and Maine Medical Center have combined to offer a $30,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.
The shooting came less than a month after a man was stabbed to death in the city's Kennedy Park neighborhood and the same weekend another Portland man was assaulted on Cumberland Avenue by attackers who said he "looked gay," police said.
The incidents startled many residents, said Councilor David Marshall, chairman of the committee.
"It's just gotten to a point that there's a lot of people who have a lot of questions," Marshall said.
The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. tomorrow in the council chambers at City Hall.
