PORTLAND -- Health care premiums increased far faster than earnings in Maine from 2000 to 2007, according to a new report.

According to the report by Families USA, a national health care advocacy organization based in Washington, D.C., the annual premiums for family coverage in Maine rose from $6,915 to $13,117, or 89.7 percent, while median earnings increased from $22,163 to $25,876, or 16.8 percent.

The cost of health care premiums rose the fastest, in relation to income, in Michigan. The lowest rate was in the District of Columbia.
