Portland police are investigating the death of a 56-year-old man who was killed when he was run over by a Public Works Department front-end loader this morning.

City officials say the man was apparently sleeping under the heavy equipment when a worker, Wayman Estes, 55 of South Portland, started it inside the city salt shed and began backing up.

Police are not releasing the victim's name until his family has been notified.
The accident occurred at 2:30 a.m. at the city facility located at 83 Hanover St.
