SKOWHEGAN -- Someone put a bogus ad in Uncle Henry's classified magazine saying free steel is available at the town's highway garage, the town manager said Thursday.

"There is no free steel, no free scrap metal of any type up there. This is a scam, somebody out there is playing with us," Town Manager John Doucette said late Thursday afternoon.

Doucette said someone put in a false advertisement, which magazine publishers told him should not have made it past the editing process.

"The town has gotten 15 calls today," Doucette said. "We have a mechanic up there who has to keep answering the phone instead of doing the work he is hired for. I've gotten calls too."
