Cruise industry tops $24 million in Maine

The North American cruise industry contributed $24 million in direct spending in Maine last year, according to a new study released by the Cruise Lines International Association.

That spending resulted in 381 new jobs paying $12 million in wages, ranking Maine 41st in the United States.

Some states without any coastline rated higher because cruise industry spending involves manufacturing, provision purchases, advertising and other activity not directly related to ship operations, said Dawn Weissman, association spokesperson.
