Average heating oil prices in Maine continue to fall significantly, down 20 cents in the past week, the state energy office is reporting.

The average statewide price is $3.08 a gallon, the agency found.

The lowest surveyed price, found in southern Maine, was $2.40 a gallon. The weekly high was a dollar more than that, in eastern and western Maine.

This week's decline continues a trend that has been under way for weeks, as crude oil prices fall to half their July levels, now at roughly $74 a barrel. Less than a week ago -- on Oct. 16 -- the state survey recorded a 33-cent decline, to $3.28.
