IN THE WEATHER:

At 9 a.m., it was 30 degrees in downtown Portland.

Our sun returns today, but not the warmth, as an arctic front that pushed out the rain and clouds has come in for a visit. The cold snap will keep us in low temperatures, with the highs only in the low to mid 50s. Grab a jacket, and maybe even a hat.

ON THE ROAD:

• ON THE MAINE TURNPIKE IN BIDDEFORD AND SACO - THE STRETCH FROM MILE 32 TO 37, northbound and southbound lane closures are scheduled from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for pavement repair. Drivers could run into some slower traffic here, when a double closure is needed, although the shoulder will be open for travel.

ON THE OCEAN:

There are still some blustery winds out there, which keeps Casco Bay at a small craft advisory today. The wind comes from the north 10 to 20 knots, and gusting up to 30. But by the afternoon, things settle, blowing 5 to 10 knots by this afternoon. Seas 3 to 5 feet.

High tide in Portland: 7:10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Low tide: 1:12 p.m.

THE NEWEST NEWS:

News you need to get your day under way:

AUTHORITIES ARE INVESTIGATING a police shooting last night in Sebago.

A Cumberland County sheriff's deputy shot 41-year-old Douglas Tenczar. Click here for staff writer Dennis Hoey's full story and check back at pressherald.com throughout the day for the latest news.

A LAGRANGE MAN who's awaiting sentencing for the fatal shooting of his wife is back behind bars.

A judge in Bangor Wednesday ordered 35-year-old Jeremy Hart held without bail pending a hearing next week on whether his bail should be revoked.

Hart is accused of violating his bail conditions because he tested positive for marijuana and Percocet, a controlled drug. He entered a plea of not guilty Wednesday.

Hart had been charged with murdering his wife, Kristen Smart Hart, last November but pleaded guilty a week ago to the lesser charge of manslaughter under a deal that caps his sentence at 15 years. No sentencing date has been set. (AP)

Game wardens say three goats have been killed by bears that also tried to get horses in a barn in eastern Maine.

Incidents have been reported at three farms in the Franklin and Sullivan areas during the past couple of weeks.

Game Warden Dave Simmons, who was called in to find out what was going on, says he drove an offending bear from a barn with a piece of wood. Simmons says the bear he saw weighed 150 to 200 pounds, but it's hard to estimate a bear's weight in the dark.

Simmons says "they're all black with a lot of teeth when you're face-to-face."

Simmons says bear attacks on farm animals are not a regular occurrence, but they aren't that uncommon either.

AUGUSTA -- A driver involved in a crash that killed a Belgrade man earlier this month has been charged with drunken driving.

Roger T. Linton, 41, of Readfield turned himself in at the Kennebec County jail Wednesday and was charged with criminal operating under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident, Kennebec County Sheriff Randall Liberty said.

Bail was set at $25,000 surety or $12,500 cash. Linton was expected to post bail Wednesday.

Additional charges are possible once the investigation is complete, Liberty said.

James J. Carey, 27, of Belgrade, was pronounced dead at the scene of the Oct. 7 crash, which occurred around 7 p.m. on Route 17.

Linton, who had been driving a Chevrolet one-ton flatbed truck loaded with stone, was found with his truck on Route 226 about two miles from where the crash occurred, Liberty said. Linton drove until the truck's engine, which was damaged in the crash, quit, Liberty said.

Linton, who was not injured, was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center for a blood alcohol test after sheriff deputies detected alcohol and police dogs found empty containers of alcohol near Linton's disabled truck, Liberty said.

Results of those tests indicate Linton had a blood alcohol level of .12, approximately 50 percent above the legal limit of .08, Liberty said.
