Drunken driving charge for Belgrade fatal

By The Associated Press wire report October 23, 2008 09:31 AM

AUGUSTA -- A driver involved in a crash that killed a Belgrade man earlier this month has been charged with drunken driving.

Roger T. Linton, 41, of Readfield turned himself in at the Kennebec County jail Wednesday and was charged with criminal operating under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident, Kennebec County Sheriff Randall Liberty said.

Bail was set at $25,000 surety or $12,500 cash. Linton was expected to post bail Wednesday.

Additional charges are possible once the investigation is complete, Liberty said.

James J. Carey, 27, of Belgrade, was pronounced dead at the scene of the Oct. 7 crash, which occurred around 7 p.m. on Route 17.

Linton, who had been driving a Chevrolet one-ton flatbed truck loaded with stone, was found with his truck on Route 226 about two miles from where the crash occurred, Liberty said. Linton drove until the truck's engine, which was damaged in the crash, quit, Liberty said.

Linton, who was not injured, was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center for a blood alcohol test after sheriff deputies detected alcohol and police dogs found empty containers of alcohol near Linton's disabled truck, Liberty said.

Results of those tests indicate Linton had a blood alcohol level of .12, approximately 50 percent above the legal limit of .08, Liberty said.
