Cumberland County Sheriff Mark Dion plans to hold a news conference this afternoon to discuss the police shooting that occurred Wednesday night.

Authorities today identified the officers who shot and wounded Douglas Tenczar, 41, as Sgt. David Hall and Deputy Steve Welsh.

Dion said today that authorities executed a search warrant late Wednesday and recovered a shotgun that they believe Tenczar was holding when he was shot by sheriff's deputies.

The Attorney General's office is investigating the use of deadly force. Hall and Welsh had gone to Tenczak's home to investigate an alleged road rage incident that had happened at another location just before the shooting.

The press conference has tentatively set for 3 p.m.

A Sebago man is in critical condition at Central Maine Medical Center this morning after being shot by Cumberland County Sheriff's deputies Wednesday night.

Douglas Tenczar, 41, of 31 Ledge Drive was flown by helicopter to the Lewiston hospital for treatment of his injuries.

The incident happened after two people filed a complaint with the sheriff's department Wednesday evening alleging that a man had shown a handgun and threatened them following what was described as a "road rage" incident, said Cumberland County Sheriff Mark Dion.

The complaint led officers to 31 Ledge Road, where they tried to question Tenczar. Tenczar approached the officers armed with a rifle or shotgun, and the officers then opened fire, Dion said.

Dion refused to identify the patrol sergeant and deputy who fired an undisclosed number of shots at Tenczar.

Members of the Maine Attorney General's Office were called in to investigate as is required in any use of deadly force by police.
