HAMPDEN -- Sophomore Frances Leslie scored a breakaway goal with 1:39 remaining in the first overtime period to lift North Yarmouth Academy to a 2-1 upset over previously unbeaten Dexter in the Class C field hockey state championship game.

It is NYA's first championship since 1994.

"This is the most exciting day of my life,'' said Julia Littlefield, coach of the Panthers. "And our team deserved it. They played a great game.''

NYA, with only two seniors, controlled play throughout and led 1-0 early in the second half on a goal by Kylie Dalbac. But Dexter regrouped and tied the game with 7:58 remaining on a goal by Cally Mountain, assisted by twin sister Crissy.

In overtime, Leslie poked the ball past Dexter's Kayla Libby, then went in to beat goalie Sam Conway.

"It was a lucky shot,'' said Leslie. "But it's a good feeling.''
