More than 60 homeless veterans from across the state came to the Togus VA Medical Center east of Augusta today for help with medical care, taxes, legal issues and to get warm clothing for the upcoming winter.
Veterans service organizations, along with public, private and federal groups, were on hand to provide services. There are an estimated 400 homeless veterans in Maine, and this event is designed to help address their needs, said Jim Doherty, Togus spokesman.
After speaking with a doctor, Richard Powers, 52, said he was looking forward to getting some new clothes.
"I'm trying to get back on my feet," said Powers, who lives in a tent in Westbrook.
